Tanzania Visa for Japanese Citizens

A complete guide for Japanese citizens and Japan passport holders planning travel to Tanzania or Zanzibar. Learn when a visa is needed, how the Tanzania eVisa works, which documents to prepare, how to select the correct category, and how to check application status before departure.

Overview

Do Japanese citizens need a visa for Tanzania?

Japanese passport holders should prepare the correct Tanzania visa or eVisa before travel unless a specific exemption applies. Japan is not shown in the official list of countries whose nationals do not require a Tanzania visa returned by the Tanzania eVisa portal.

The Tanzania Electronic Visa Application System allows eligible travelers to apply online for visits to the United Republic of Tanzania, including Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. Applicants fill in the online form, make payment and submit the application electronically for internal review and processing.

Important

Use one passport consistently

Japanese travelers should use the same passport for the visa application, airline booking, boarding and arrival checks. If the passport is renewed after application, the traveler should review whether the visa record still matches the travel document.

Possession of a visa is not final authority to enter Tanzania. The final entry decision is made by Tanzanian immigration officers at the port of entry.

Zanzibar

Can Japanese citizens use the Tanzania eVisa for Zanzibar?

Yes. The official Tanzania eVisa portal states that the online visa system applies to visits to the United Republic of Tanzania, covering both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. Japanese citizens visiting Zanzibar only, the mainland only, or both destinations should enter the correct first destination and travel route.

If the itinerary includes Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Zanzibar or ferry transfers, keep the route consistent across the application, flights, hotels and tour documents.

Japan travel planning

Safari, Zanzibar and business travel from Japan

Japanese travelers may visit Tanzania for safari, beach holidays, cultural travel, business meetings, conferences, academic programs, family visits or professional assignments. The visa category should reflect the real purpose and supporting documents should match the selected purpose.

If the trip includes work, project assignment, media activity, study, volunteering or long-term residence, check whether a standard tourist category is sufficient before applying.

Timing and status

When should Japanese citizens apply?

Japanese travelers should apply before travel and allow enough time for review, document checks and possible additional requests. Tanzania Immigration guidelines advise applicants to use the official immigration website, read the visa guidelines and ensure passport validity before submission. Do not wait until the final days before departure.

Recommended preparation

Apply once your passport, travel dates, route and accommodation are reasonably confirmed. Save the Application ID, payment confirmation and approval notice with your travel documents.

Do not travel only with a submitted form

Submitting the form does not mean the visa is approved. Wait for the visa decision or approval notice before relying on the application for travel.
