Official-list overview

Who can enter Tanzania without applying for a visa?

Tanzania Immigration publishes a list of nationals and passport holders who are not required to apply for a visa to enter Tanzania. The list includes several EAC, SADC, Commonwealth and other listed territories and jurisdictions.

Travelers should verify their current status before departure because visa-free, visa-on-arrival, online visa and referral visa categories can be reviewed or updated by the authorities.

Entry authority

Visa-free entry is still subject to immigration checks

Being on a visa-free list means the traveler may not need to apply for a visa for that entry route. It does not remove normal immigration formalities. Travelers may still need to present a valid passport, return ticket or onward travel evidence, address details, funds evidence if requested, and any health-related documents required at the time.

The immigration officer at the entry point has final authority over admission.

Comparison

Visa-free vs visa-required travelers

How Tanzania visa-free entry differs from visa-required travel
Traveler category Visa application needed? What to prepare Important caution
Visa-free nationality No normal visa application for the listed visa-free entry route. Passport, return/onward travel, accommodation or host details, trip purpose. Entry can still be refused if requirements are not met.
Visa-required nationality Usually yes: eVisa, visa on arrival where eligible, or another official route. Passport, photo, visa fee, return ticket, accommodation and purpose documents. Wrong visa category or missing documents can delay or reject the application.
Referral visa nationality Yes, with prior approval or online referral processing. Passport, photo, covering letter, host details and supporting evidence. Apply early; travelers are advised not to book before approval.
Resident or permit holder Different rules may apply depending on permit/pass status. Residence permit, passport, pass or supporting documents. Carry proof of lawful residence or permit status.
Transit traveler Depends on nationality and route. Onward ticket and destination-entry documents. Transit is not the same as tourism or stopover sightseeing.

How to use the list

How to check if you are visa-free for Tanzania

Check passport nationality

Use the nationality shown on the passport you will use to enter Tanzania, not your residence country or airline departure country.

Compare with the official list

Find your nationality on the Tanzania Immigration list of countries whose nationals do not require a visa.

Check passport type

Ordinary, diplomatic, service, refugee or other travel documents can have different treatment.

Review travel purpose

Tourism, business, study, work, volunteering or long stay can create different documentation needs even for visa-free travelers.

Prepare arrival documents

Carry return ticket, accommodation, host, business, safari or Zanzibar details that support the trip.

Recheck before departure

Rules can be reviewed. Recheck close to travel if your trip is important, long, unusual or multi-country.

Mainland and Zanzibar

Does visa-free entry include Zanzibar?

Tanzania entry rules apply to the United Republic of Tanzania, including Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. Visa-free travelers visiting both should keep the first destination, accommodation, domestic flight or ferry and return ticket details consistent.

For example, a traveler may arrive in Kilimanjaro for safari, continue to Zanzibar by domestic flight and depart from Zanzibar. Even without a visa application, the traveler should carry itinerary evidence.

Multi-country warning

Tanzania visa-free status does not cover other countries

A traveler who is visa-free for Tanzania may still need a visa, eTA or travel authorization for Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique or another country. Each country has its own entry rules.

Multi-country safari travelers should check every border and destination separately before departure.

If not listed

What if your country is not visa-free?

If your nationality is not on the Tanzania visa-free list, you may need to apply online, obtain a visa on arrival where eligible, or follow referral visa procedures if your nationality is in a special category.

Do not assume a neighboring country’s visa rule applies to Tanzania. Check Tanzania-specific requirements using the passport you will travel with.
