Nigeria visa policy update

Nigeria is no longer in Tanzania's Referred Visa Category

Tanzania Immigration announced on 25 September 2026 that citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria had been officially removed from the Referred Visa Category.

This means Nigerian passport holders should no longer follow the former Nigeria-specific referral process simply because they hold a Nigerian passport.

Nigerian applicants should instead choose the Tanzania visa category that correctly matches their purpose of travel and complete the normal online visa application procedure.

This page remains under the established /visa-referral-countries/nigeria/ URL because it previously provided Nigeria referral-visa information. Its content has now been updated to reflect the current Tanzania Immigration policy.

Tourism

Which Tanzania visa should Nigerian tourists apply for?

Nigerian citizens travelling to Tanzania for an ordinary tourism purpose will normally use the Ordinary Visa where their circumstances meet the conditions of that category.

Tourism may include holidays, safari travel, leisure visits and other permitted visitor activities covered by the Ordinary Visa.

The official Tanzania Immigration fee for an Ordinary Visa is USD 50.

Validity

Tanzania Ordinary Visa validity

Tanzania Immigration lists the Ordinary Visa as being valid for a stay of up to 90 days.

Travellers should always check the validity and conditions stated on the visa actually issued to them.

The Ordinary Visa should not be used for activities that require a different immigration category, permit or authorization.

Wait for approval

Wait for your Visa Grant Notice or approval notification before starting your journey.

Processing time

Tanzania eVisa processing time for Nigerian citizens

Tanzania Immigration states that normal online visa applications are generally processed within 10 days, except applications that fall under the Referred Visa Category.

Because Nigerian citizens have been removed from the referral category, the previous Nigeria-specific two-month referral guidance should no longer be used as the normal processing rule.

Applicants should still apply before travelling and allow extra time in case additional documents or further immigration review are required.

Application tracking

How to check your Tanzania visa status

Applicants should keep their application identification details after submission.

Application progress can be checked through the visa application system using the identifying information associated with the application.

Approval information and the Visa Grant Notice should be reviewed before departure.

Visa payment

Tanzania visa fee for Nigerian citizens

The official Tanzania Immigration fee for the Ordinary Visa is USD 50.

Visa fees vary for other visa categories. Applicants should make sure they select the correct visa type before paying.

Where an independent visa-assistance company is used, any separate service charge should be clearly distinguished from the official Tanzania government visa fee.

Before travel

Wait for the Visa Grant Notice before travelling

Online applicants should wait until their visa application has been approved before beginning their journey to Tanzania.

Travellers should keep a copy of their Visa Grant Notice and other relevant travel documents available for airline and immigration checks.

Entry decision

Visa approval does not automatically guarantee entry

A Tanzania visa or Visa Grant Notice allows the traveller to present themselves for immigration clearance.

Final admission remains subject to immigration checks at the Tanzanian point of entry and compliance with applicable entry requirements.

Mainland and Zanzibar

Can Nigerian citizens visit Zanzibar with a Tanzania eVisa?

Yes. Tanzania's visa system covers travel to the United Republic of Tanzania, including Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

If the trip includes both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, the applicant should correctly state the first destination in the visa application.

A separate visa is not required solely because a traveller moves between Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar during the same permitted trip.

Travel details

Keep the application consistent with your itinerary

Your visa category, travel purpose, accommodation information, destination and supporting documents should all describe the same trip.

Travellers should not apply under the tourism category when their intended activities require another visa, permit or immigration authorization.

Visa categories

Tanzania visa types for different travel purposes

Important notice

Older Nigeria referral-visa information may now be outdated

Search engines, archived web pages, travel forums and older visa guides may still state that Nigerian citizens must follow Tanzania's Referred Visa procedure.

That information became outdated following the September 2026 policy change removing Nigerian nationals from the Referred Visa Category.

Nigerian applicants should use current Tanzania Immigration visa guidance when selecting their visa type and preparing an application.

Referral policy

Nigeria should no longer be treated as a current referral country

Nigeria previously appeared in Tanzania's Referred Visa Category. It was officially removed from that category in September 2026.

Travellers who need information about countries and statuses that remain subject to Tanzania's referral visa rules can review the current referral section.
